Yes,Yes,Yes, Traveler came to Cali, thank God, I couldn't wait. Got there early like I always do, and am 3rd in line to get in, and first to get tickets.
I should have known something was fucked up when a lady from the theatre came up to me and asked me how I learned about the "Venue". Huh, the "Venue"? Who cares about the "Venue" I am here to see the mighty mighty Blues Traveler, not the stupid "Venue". So here I am in Napa, early, rubbin my hands together at the prospect of getting to see my favorite band front and center, for a night full of dancing, and jamming like only Blues Traveler brings. I get my tickets for what I was told was the "Floor", and I get into this place and I can't see a dance floor, all I see are seats, and skinny little aisles. Our seats are no where near the front, and I am depressed. I haven't had to see Traveler from this far away since the Horde Tours. So Points North comes on, and we sit down, get to know our "theatre" neighbors, lovely people originally from our home town of LA, and they have never seen Blues Traveler before, and they were going on and on about the "Venue". I mean it was cool and all, retro, gold trim, nice acoustics to make the crowd sound big, but really, who cares? Everybody but me and a hand full of Travelers. I finally realized that most of the people in the crowd were there because the "Venue" was trendy and well promoted, and didn't know much about Blues Traveler. Hence the marketing director finding out how effective their advertising dollar was at the front door.
So Points North is cool, its just, they have no singer, so I take off when the lead guitarist lets me know his set is two songs from being over, to go smoke a left handed cigarette out by my car, and a right handed one by front of the Theater.
Crossing the street towards my car, I see Hill's motorcycle parked in front of a gold bus, and Chan and Tad pop out. I waved to them and complained to them about all the seats, he said whadya gonna do, and I said check the web site better next time (which is a lie, because I still would have came if I knew how formal the theatre was) and Chan said, "you can still find a place to dance." I kept walking not wanting to seem ingrateful, and figuring they had better things to do then talk to me.
So I am back in the theatre little bit of a buzz, and a somewhat heavy heart. My girl asks me (voice full of doubt) if we are gonna be able to dance, Points North is done with their set, so I ask the bouncer that was watching at the corner of the stage. The bouncer said dancing in the aisles was appropriate, just remember that people paid for their seats. Duly noted as always. Gotta show proper respects for the authorities. On my way up a fan in a tie die asks if I was talking to security about dancing and I filled him in on the house rules. His seats being next to the aisle and closer to the stage we met again when the band got to the magic.
Intro to the Empire, and up comes Blues Traveler, and out comes Love and Greed. Me and Tinker Bell fly out to the aisles to get to groovin Blues Traveler style. Popper looked and sounded great. Chan sounded crisp, on top of his solos, and Carolina intro sounded like a complete thought instead of a drunken ramble. Tads first solo was a little rusty, but he pulled it through. Wilson still brings that wild big top/gospel revival feel. Hills got the beats that move the feets, so it is easy peasy japaneesy to get a little breezy. The moves came natural, feets don't fail me now, but except for a handful of people, I mean a handful of people, no one was dancing. It was like a movie theatre, and Blues Traveler was the new yet to be critiqued flick.
I get a tap on the back. It was a lady, must be in her early 40s, designer jeans, cleavage showing top, and very empowered. "Can you please not dance in front of us we payed for these seats." Can you believe that? Especially since I paid the same price for the seats that I had. So we dance on. If you wanna see the band stand up and see the band. What happens next is a testament to our band, and the duration of one of their songs in the psyche of the Average American. A song that most fans disdain (not this one) and hate to hear.
The handfull of fans were groovin, havin a good time, enjoying life, not caring if the rest of the crowd wasn't getting it. Girl Inside My Head. They started to, they looked like they wanted to dance but were too self conscious to do it. Crash Burn. Like they wanted to join in, but were too shy. Me and Tink had a friend with the Tied Died fan closer to the stage, and kept our beers their and celebrated with them and the Loyal Travelers who were now beginning to fill up the aisles. And then.......
Run Around. I heard a "oh, that was these guys?" and the crowd finally had their invite, they finally heard something "acceptable", and up they stood, not the whole audience, but the majority. By the time they hit But Anyway, the whole crowd was on their feet, and the Fellas had them, all the way till the end of the show.
What a class act Blues Traveler is, what troopers, what talent, and what spirit. I felt like they deliverd a blow to the uptightness of Trendiness, I felt like they made some people feel free again. Oh and BTW, that lady who tapped me on the shoulder to ask me to stop dancing, well last time I saw her she was groovin in the aisles right next to me and the Bell, and by the time Support Your Local Emperor, played we were down next to Chan at the stage, and he pointed out how we found room to dance.
Thanks Fellas. Not my favorite show, but you guys are fucken rock stars, and showed it that night, conquering the doubters.

Your welcome, You would have been proud, the atmosphere was like the Grammy Awards, hear we are now, entertain us. When you leave the place and everyone is on their feet, it is a testement as to how Blues Traveler got to where they were, and will probably go again. Even though it means losing that intimate venue setting, I would love to see them jamming for huge crowds again. Their sound is great, and fun, and Im still loving it after all these years.

Yeah, I've been to a few of those "great new venue" gigs and generally didn't enjoy myself nearly as much. Especially with tired, old, boring, lazy nothing else to do on a Friday night crowds in attendance. Of course, it's always fun to watch the boys win people over song- by song as they nearly always do.
The rare treat nowdays it seems is a crowd full of hardcore BT fans, like at Red Rocks on the 4th. People just as stoked to enjoy the Alone/Sweet Talkin' Hippie segue as they were the opening bars of Run-Around. That gig was magic and it had been a long long time since I felt that at a show. It's making me seriously consider a trip across the country for the early Nov 2 night Brooklyn Bowl run. Need to get up close and rock with my people again! I just got back from seeing Black Keys at the Hollywood Palladium last week and the energy and excitement of the crowd made it feel like my 1st BT show at the Hollywood Palace on 4/19/93. A serious collective feeling of "Fuck Yeah" by several hundred who don't want it to end. Rock and Roll.Posted 1 year ago # -
We gotta keep in touch then, the Palace was my first show, and the Paladium is a helluva place to see any band. I am from LA and my Cuz has a barbershop in Hollywood down there where we all kick back and watch the Football games, and get together before going to shows. I just saw Further with him at the greek the other day. He is a dead fan, and I am Blues Traveler fan.
I wish I made it to Red Rocks but getting my family across country is like a major military action, and as about as expensive too.
Let me know if you ever wanna hook up for Sunday games at the Barberdollz down in Hollywood? I am waiting for BT to make it back to that neck of the woods, I saw them at the San Diego show last year for the first time in a million and they had me at the first song Back in The Day, first time me and my brother and cousin were all at the same show ever, and we all listened to BT growing up.
Keep in touch, it would be nice to know when I am walking into a situation like that again, I haven't been to enough of their shows to know which venues are right, and which venues are tough like that. Sometimes we fans gotta work too in those situations, and it would be nice to know when we are in for a lick. That was unexpected.
