I'd like to see a real blues song and i'd love to see a new instrumental song, which features a hell of drum playing by brendan! :)
i'd to see songs that wouldnt reach my heart ... (but i think every song will!)
*sorry , i meant "i'd HATE so see songs that wouldnt reach my heart ... (but i think every song will!)
Johnny,
How about another fast cookin' song in the family of Brother John/Crash and Burn?! Something to make Brendan work:) Back-to-back sometimes a man needs more than nine and a half minutes of good fast rockin'.
I would like to hear some harmonica jams that have a verse and chorus, I miss that. Too many jams on their new album just had a solo to remind us it was Blues Traveler.
One thing I would also like is for John and Tad to battle it out for expression. I miss that. Bobby used to have these bass lines that were like scats, pushing it as far as you can until you become recklessly close to not pulling it off and blowing the rythm. John would have these epic choruses that were long, smart, catchy, and beebity bop bop ba doom dop daddidlly dop dopta doom dop dee deyeahhhhhhh! Oh how I miss that shit, always blew me away. I know Tads style is different but I can tell that he is totally capable of having his own verses and choruses to show case his talent, and can compete with John tit for tat on who can biddilly be bopa dat. The Front or the Bass?
What I don't want is another album that is like North Hollywood Shoot Out, although I love that album, I missed the effort that they put into the older albums and rely less on the folks style that the fellas can do so well in between the jams. I don't want to see another full album of that.
Gordon,
Great post above...this is exactly what I want to hear....the new stuff is okay but these guys have sooo much more potential. BT, hire Gordon as a consultant when you make your next album....he is clearly articulating what many fans miss about BT.
I am looking forward to seeing BT in Rutland, VT in September...thanks for coming to the northeast.
They don't need to hire me, I would do it for the memories.
There comes a time in most band's carreer arc where they feel they need to change and grow. I think that BT has done that and their sound is ready for their renaissance. I think that they need to release an album that returns them to their roots but with a we know now more than we knew then kind of feel.
Wilson has added a whole dimension to their sound, and like I said before, Chan seems much more sure of himself when not simply fighting for space between John and Bobby. I think the key lies with John tapping into that motivation that drives him to try to play the way that R2D2 beeps and squeeks and tells you everything. It would also be nice to hear Tad push the envelope too because he is locked in so well with Hill that he has tons of room there to showboat.
I want to hear an album that brings that big tent revival feel that I get when I see them at their best. I like to hear John preach, he has alot of cool things to say, and I feel like he watered that down a bit on the last album for whatever reason.
I want to hear an album where they are dueling again, taking turns to show off and get some for their fans. You can tell that they like to do this live, but they used to work that into the fabric of their albums and I would love to hear it again.
I want to hear an album where the band realises that they are loved for their effort and that it is worth it to put it out there one more time. I am sure it is hard trying to create something new to say and a new way to say it. What I am saying is don't say anything new, don't say it in a new way, just say it the best you can because you all are professionals and you got us right where you want us believe it or not. Screw the radio, screw the big audience, play for yourselves, play for your fans that travel to see you, play for the love of playing and that is where the magic lies. I wanna hear Blues Traveler and Thieves Saving Souls, and Bridging from Four to Straight on Till Morning. That is a mighty legacy that I don't think the band realises how great they are and how much great music they have given us and that they don't have to do it new and different, that there is no new way to package things that is gonna be magic, not magical producers, or no magical new process, just whatever it is that you all did before, play it one more time, because for some reason it always comes out fresh and always results in a tasty jam.
Check out Chan talking bout the new album.
I would simply like to hear some tunes on the new record that suit John's voice better. As we all know, his voice is declining and alot of BT songs require high pitch and he is struggling with those now. I can here some moody, sultry tunes like "Make My Way" or something along those lines. His voice also sounded really good on his latest solo release.
I see The Devil Makes Three as one of the more unique bands as far as sound. That sound that speaks to what the band is. BT once had a sound that spoke volumes, but somewhere along the way it quieted. I want that sound back. Eye of the tiger shit. Pink Floyd wish you were here sound. I understand sounds change and bands evolve or whathaveyou. But there is a "Joe know say qua" as the mighty French say that I think BT can and will find again. Always up for a good ode to cannabis.
